Nigeria’s leading ICT company has leveraged the Children’s day celebrations to remind parents that amidst the many benefits of the internet, it can be a dangerous place for children if there are no safeguards in place. At a Children’s day webinar titled “Building a safe and positive online presence for your child” which held on the 27th May, 2024, the ICT company joined millions around the world to celebrate the gift of childhood and children.
The interactive webinar hosted by the retail division of the company was open to the general public and well attended by children and parents. The session featured a key presentation on “The child, the internet and safety” delivered by ipNX’s Chief Technology Architect, Oluwaseun Oluboyo and a panel discussion moderated by ipNX Retail Head of Sales, Taiwo Akintunde with Chief Technology Architect, ipNX, Oluwaseun Oluboyo and Divisional CEO, ipNX Retail, Kene Eneh as panellists. The session provided practical tips as well as valuable insights for attendees to stay safe while surfing the internet.
During his presentation, Oluwaseun noted that the internet is like a very busy expressway filled with information (instead of vehicles) travelling at high speed. He also emphasised that: “you wouldn’t let your seven-year-old cross the expressway by himself/herself, the same logic applies here. The internet makes no claim to being a safe place and there are a lot of bad actors out there. Parents have to be intentional about the content and interactions that they allow their children engage with on the internet.”
Also addressing parents at the event, Kene explained that “the need to monitor your child’s online activity while maintaining trust can be challenging but it is possible through open communication. We as parents need to educate our children about the risks of being online and the need to protect them. We also need to set expectations, let them know acceptable online behaviour and practices that are off-limits to them as we get them involved in the process of making these decisions. Trust becomes a challenge if on one side your child is carrying out some activities and you are on the other side policing and setting rules without communicating and helping him/her understand the reason(s) for your decisions”.
The ipNX Children’s Day event presented a remarkable occasion for the brand to underscore its dedication to enduring human and family principles, as well as its role in fostering a safer digital environment for all online participants. Earlier this year, the brand hosted a cybersecurity awareness webinar for its valued customers and the public, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to responsible corporate citizenship and active community engagement.
